12 Years A Slave Won The Award For Best Picture At The 2014 Academy Awards
12 Years A Slave’ won the award for Best Picture at the 2014 Academy Awards on March 2. The intense, remarkable, much-talked about period drama beat out some of the most acclaimed films of the year for the honor!
Will Smith presented the final award of the night, and seemed delighted to hand the award to 12 Years A Slave. Brad Pitt, Steve McQueen, and the rest of the sprawling casttook the stage, where McQueen sweetly
thanked the cast, crew, and of course, Solomon Northup, the man whose remarkable story served as the basis for the film...He also added...“I know I speak for everyone standing behind me that has been an absolute privilege to work on Solomon’s story. We all get to stand here tonight because of one man who allowed us to tell that story and that is Steve McQueen. Steve then took over — he was clearly emotional.
“Everyone deserves not to survive, but to live,” he said. “This is the legacy of Solomon Northup.”
Of course, it wasn’t an easy road to victory for 12 Years A Slave — this year’s list of nominees was jam-packed with phenomenal films. American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Her, Nebraska, Philomena, and The Wolf of Wall Street were also nominated in the category, making
it a pretty tight race to the finish.
But 12 Year A Slave Actor Chiwitel Ejiofor lost the award for Best Actor to Matthew
McConaughey, while Cate Blanchett stunned in a win for Best Actress. Jared Leto started off the night with his Best Supporting Actor win, while Lupita Nyong’o — also from 12 Years — won Best Supporting Actress...
